Sharjah is investing $7.7 million to boost Khorfakkan’s water security

Sharjah is expanding its water infrastructure in Khorfakkan with the construction of two new reservoirs aimed at strengthening water security and improving the efficiency of the city’s distribution network.

The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) is developing the reservoirs at its SEWA 1 and SEWA 2 stations at a total cost of AED28.23 million ($7.7 million). Each reservoir will have a storage capacity of two million gallons.

The project is expected to double water storage capacity at the two stations, giving the network greater flexibility to respond to rising demand while supporting the continuity and reliability of water supplies.

Saud Abdul Aziz, Director of the Khorfakkan Department at SEWA, said the additional capacity would strengthen the city’s water storage and distribution system and improve the network’s ability to operate efficiently under different conditions.

The infrastructure upgrade comes as utilities across the UAE continue to invest in water security and network resilience amid population growth and increasing demand for essential services.

SEWA is working to bring the two reservoirs into operation by the end of 2026, ahead of the project’s contractual completion date in March 2027.

Once operational, the reservoirs are expected to play a key role in Khorfakkan’s water network while supporting SEWA’s broader efforts to upgrade infrastructure and improve operational efficiency.
