Coral reefs, crucial for sustaining a quarter of the ocean’s fish, face an existential threat. The 2014-2017 global coral bleaching event alone impacted 70% of coral reefs worldwide.

Red Sea Global (RSG), the developer behind The Red Sea and Amaala, unveiled its “Coral Commitment” at an event to COP28 to protect and restore coral reefs in the Red Sea and beyond.

This announcement was made aboard the renowned “Ocean Xplorer” vessel. The company signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with The Coral Research & Development Accelerator Platform (CORDAP) to strengthen its efforts.

Additionally, RSG launched the new brand “Corallium” for its marine life institute at Amaala, underscoring its dedication to marine research and education. The company revealed the results of the first phase of its Coral Gardening Pilot Project.

Through its Coral Gardening Pilot Project, RDG oversees around 300 reef locations, undertaking coral rescue operations by relocating corals and experimenting with coral farming methods for reef restoration. Last year, they launched offshore floating nurseries to nurture a limited number of rescued corals, achieving a success rate of 97%.

Professor Carlos Duarte, Executive Director at CORDAP, said, “The greatest risk to the planet does not rest on the climate and biodiversity crises, but on people giving up on the dream of a healthier, cleaner and safer planet.”

“Many ecosystems and species could still be rebuilt by 2050 if people worked together to repair the damage and stabilize the climate. CORDAP and RSG are engines for keeping that dream alive,” explained Duarte.

CORDAP, established by the G20 in 2020, leads research and development initiatives to protect the world’s coral reefs. The strategic partnership between RSG and CORDAP aims to expedite the development and implementing of innovative technologies, thereby bolstering international coral conservation efforts.
