As the payment industry continues to evolve, there’s a remarkable surge in the adoption of digital wallets. The rising trend is reflected in the UAE, with travelers going cashless for a more convenient and secure experience.

According to the 2023 Global Travel Intentions Study by Visa, 70% of UAE outbound travelers utilized digital wallets, highlighting a growing preference for cashless convenience.

Interestingly, the study found that affluent travelers used digital wallets 16% more frequently than the average traveler.

Notably, 83% of UAE residents used their familiar domestic cards while traveling, indicating a preference for familiar payment methods. Acceptance and low fees remained the primary factors influencing card choice.

Despite rising travel costs, the study reveals an enduring enthusiasm for travel among UAE residents. Only 3% considered canceling their trips, showcasing a strong willingness to travel despite financial concerns.

The average UAE traveler undertook two international trips of 10 days each in the past year, primarily seeking relaxation (58%) and connecting with family and friends (42%).

Independent travel (61%) took precedence over packaged tours, as travelers sought flexibility and control over their itineraries. Interestingly, 40% of travelers were willing to pay a premium for the freedom to modify their trips.

Family travel with older children emerged as the category with the highest spending at destinations, followed by Gen Z travelers who tended to spend more pre-trip. Interestingly, 85% of travelers expressed pre-trip payment concerns, with worries about card acceptance, currency conversion, and ATM fees at the forefront. Gen Z travelers were particularly concerned about card fraud, while affluent travelers expressed concerns about cash-related issues.

Sustainability awareness is gaining traction among UAE travelers, with 73% acknowledging its importance. Nearly half (49%) actively sought eco-friendly options on their latest trip, primarily focusing on sustainable accommodation and energy-efficient transport. However, access to information on sustainable travel remains a challenge for most (73%), suggesting a need for improved communication and education.
