Saudi Arabia is building a $5 billion offshore theme park
The Rig will have 70 attractions, 800 hotel rooms, 11 restaurants, and a marina large enough for 50 yachts.
Saudi Arabia is taking its tourism ambitions to new heights with The Rig, a theme park built on a former offshore oil platform. This megaproject promises to be a game-changer, attracting adventure seekers and luxury travelers.
The Rig will be capable of hosting up to 10,000 visitors daily. Spread across 300,000 square meters, the theme park will boast 70 attractions, 800 hotel rooms, 11 restaurants, and a marina large enough for 50 yachts. What is the estimated price tag? A cool $5 billion.
Located 40 kilometers off the Saudi coast near the Berri oilfield and Al Juraid Island, The Rig is an homage to the kingdom’s rich oil and gas history while offering a futuristic vision for tourism.
This ambitious project aligns perfectly with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy beyond oil. Tourism is a key pillar of this strategy, with the kingdom aiming to attract 150 million tourists annually by 2030.
Saudi Arabia’s tourism push is already yielding results. Tourism revenue in 2023 reached record levels of $36 billion, representing a remarkable 42.8% increase from the previous year.
The Rig promises to be a crown jewel in Saudi Arabia’s growing tourism portfolio. Divided into four distinct sections —The Jackup, The Derrick, The Riser, and the Moonpool — the platform will offer experiences ranging from high-adrenaline zip-lining over the sea to underwater explorations via submarine trips. Visitors can reach this one-of-a-kind destination by helicopter, ferry, yacht, or cruise ship.
The Derrick, themed around a drilling operation, will be the largest of the rigs, boasting four restaurants, an amusement park, and a luxurious five-star hotel. The Riser, the second-largest section, will cater to thrill-seekers, focusing on extreme sports and adventure activities.
