Egypt to host World Urban Forum, reveals plans for enhanced waste management and green tourism
Egyptian ministers outline a comprehensive plan to address waste management, sustainable strategies, and tourism growth
Egypt’s Housing and Environment Ministries are collaborating to address the nation’s waste management challenges and promote sustainable urban development. In a high-level meeting, Ministers Sherif El-Sherbini and Yasmine Fouad unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance waste management systems and position Egypt as a leading green tourism destination.
A central focus of the collaboration is the upcoming World Urban Forum, which Egypt will host in November. This event will provide a platform to unveil a national green urban development strategy and highlight the country’s dedication to climate action and sustainable practices. The discussions also covered key topics such as climate change, green building initiatives, and efforts to monitor air quality and carbon reduction, including projects like the electric train.
Waste management is a top priority in the plan, with the government aiming to enforce stricter regulations for waste collection companies, invest in modern waste treatment facilities, and shut down the notorious Obour landfill. A new integrated waste management complex is set to be constructed in the 10th of Ramadan City.
The meeting also highlighted the implementation of a comprehensive waste collection system to attract investors and align with global standards. Additionally, strategies were reviewed for managing industrial wastewater in factories, promoting eco-friendly tourism by leveraging the country’s natural reserves, and advancing the Great Transfiguration Project in St. Catherine City.
