Oman accelerates green mobility with 300% rise in electric vehicles
The nation accelerates sustainable transport initiatives as part of Vision 2050, with EV infrastructure expansion and broader eco-friendly innovations.
Promoting green mobility would greatly benefit Oman, aligning with its efforts to diversify the economy away from oil dependency and create new job opportunities in electric vehicle manufacturing and renewable energy.
Eng. Khamis bin Mohammed Al Shamakhi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology for Transport, noted a 300% increase in electric vehicles (EVs) on Omani roads in 2024, rising from 550 in 2023 to 1,500.
This significant growth highlights Oman’s commitment to green mobility and its broader environmental sustainability goals, particularly in reducing the nation’s carbon footprint as part of its Vision 2050 strategy.
Al Shamakhi emphasized that sustainable transport is a vital aspect of Oman’s long-term Vision 2050 plan, which aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions and promote greener mobility solutions. The government has invested heavily in EV infrastructure to support this transition. In 2023, over 120 electric vehicle charging stations were installed nationwide, with plans to expand to more than 200 by the end of 2024 and 350 by 2027.
Oman’s commitment to green mobility goes beyond simply increasing the number of EVs on the road. The Ministry is collaborating with the private sector to enhance infrastructure across its governorates, including expanding the availability of charging stations and integrating electric power into other sectors.
Plans include converting port equipment to electric power, modernizing airports for sustainable operations, and exploring eco-friendly fuel production for aviation. Additionally, initiatives are underway to reduce emissions at data centers and communication towers, further bolstering Oman’s environmental sustainability efforts.
By integrating these diverse initiatives, Oman is making substantial progress toward its Vision 2050 goals, emphasizing economic diversification and environmental sustainability.
