Oman is making notable progress in environmental stewardship, as reflected in its high Environmental Performance Index (EPI) rankings. This index assesses a country’s environmental health using 58 sub-indicators, highlighting the effectiveness of existing policies.

Dr. Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, underscored Oman’s commitment to sustainable practices. The country achieved global standings in the fisheries sector—17th overall, 5th in the Arab world, 4th in the Middle East, and 1st in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Oman ranked 29th globally in agriculture, leading among Arab, Middle Eastern, and GCC nations. This recognition results from concerted efforts to enhance agricultural practices, increase local production, and ensure food security, all while prioritizing environmental protection.

Oman’s performance in the water resources index also received high praise, ranking 9th globally, 2nd in the Arab world and GCC, and 3rd in the Middle East. This achievement highlights the country’s effective management of water resources, particularly important in a region prone to scarcity.

Dr. Al Habsi emphasized the significance of strategic planning for future food security. “Our strategic plans are designed to ensure the future of food security in the Sultanate of Oman, as we remain committed to achieving an integrated and sustainable food security system,” he stated.

While these rankings are commendable, they also highlight the necessity for continued efforts to address environmental challenges. Striking a balance between growth in agriculture and fisheries with sustainability remains crucial for Oman’s long-term environmental health and food security.
