The 11th edition of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Middle East Regional Young Talents Program, in partnership with Khalifa University of Science and Technology, has celebrated six Arab female scientists for their groundbreaking contributions to STEM.

These honorees were awarded grants to support their innovative research across a range of fields, including neuroscience, transcriptomics, and climate science. The 2024 recipients are driving transformative projects with global implications, from addressing climate change and exploring the biotechnological potential of seaweed to advancing research on cardiovascular diseases and autism.

The 2024 awardees of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Middle East Regional Young Talents Program are Dr. Entessar Al-Hetlani (Kuwait) for Forensic Chemistry, Fatima Alshamsi (UAE) for Transcriptomics, Dr. Hiam Souheil Chemaitelly (Lebanon) for Infectious Diseases, Israa Al Hussain Al Hassan Othman (Sudan) for Nanomaterials and Photocatalysis, Dr. Leena Ali Ibrahim (Palestine-Bulgaria) for Neuroscience, and Taiba Alamoudi (Saudi Arabia) for Marine Science. This initiative is part of the global L’Oréal-UNESCO program, which has supported over 4,100 researchers and 127 Laureates from more than 110 countries since its inception in 1998.

Since its launch in the Middle East, the program has supported 57 female scientists, offering critical funding and recognition to help them address pressing global issues.

Despite STEM’s pivotal role in innovation, women remain underrepresented, constituting just 29.2% of the global STEM workforce, according to the World Economic Forum. Under the banner “The world needs science, and science needs women,” the program aims to foster gender diversity and propel female scientists toward leadership roles.

H.E. Sarah Al Amiri, UAE Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology and Chairperson of the UAE Space Agency, has endorsed the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program for the sixth consecutive year.

She praised the program’s significant role in empowering women researchers across various scientific fields, highlighting its contribution to fostering leadership, innovation, and excellence in STEM, while amplifying women’s influence in these vital domains.

Laurent Duffier, Managing Director of L’Oréal Middle East, reiterated the company’s commitment to addressing the underrepresentation of women in STEM. “By supporting their research and fostering their career progression, we not only advance science but also inspire the next generation of women to lead in STEM.”
