The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has urged stronger international collaboration to tackle pollution, climate change, and environmental threats affecting the world’s oceans. This appeal was made during an interactive dialogue at the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Representing the GCC, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Nasser Al-Hein, emphasized the council’s commitment to ocean conservation, calling them a vital pillar of the global ecosystem and essential to the livelihoods and food security of millions worldwide.

He emphasized that the right to a clean and healthy environment is fundamental to key human rights, including access to food, healthcare, and sustainable development.

Al-Hein outlined the GCC’s ongoing initiatives to protect marine ecosystems, highlighting policies aimed at reducing pollution, promoting sustainable fishing, and preserving biodiversity and coastal habitats. He also underscored the council’s commitment to strengthening ocean conservation and advancing the blue economy.

Al-Hein highlighted the Gulf states’ active role in global marine conservation, particularly through the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), and their support for international efforts to curb marine pollution.

In closing, he emphasized the GCC’s commitment to enhancing international ocean governance and fostering cross-border cooperation to address shared environmental challenges, highlighting the importance of responsible stewardship for future generations.
