Abu Dhabi reportedly in talks with OpenAI for potential 5GW data center
The planned Abu Dhabi data center, if completed as envisioned, would represent a major leap forward in the region’s digital capabilities.

OpenAI is reportedly preparing to participate in the development of a major new data center in the UAE—a project that could become one of the largest in the world, Bloomberg News reported on Friday.
According to the report, the ChatGPT creator is expected to be one of the primary anchor tenants of a planned 5-gigawatt data center campus in Abu Dhabi. While OpenAI’s involvement has not been finalized, a formal announcement could be made soon.
The development aligns with the UAE’s strategic push to become a global hub for artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. Over the past few years, the Gulf nation has made significant investments in cloud computing, AI research, and data centers to diversify its economy and position itself as a technology leader in the Middle East.
The country has partnered with major global tech firms, including Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and G42, to build an advanced data infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale AI workloads. If completed as envisioned, the planned Abu Dhabi data center would represent a major leap forward in the region’s digital capabilities.
The latest report comes from the UAE and the United States, which signed an agreement on Thursday to build what is expected to be the largest AI campus outside the U.S. The initiative further underscores the UAE’s ambition to become a key player in the global AI ecosystem.
By attracting leading AI firms like OpenAI, the UAE aims to reinforce its position in the next wave of technological transformation while providing critical infrastructure for training and deploying advanced AI models.
