Abu Dhabi is poised to become a regional leader in game design education with the launch of the UAE’s first university-level degree in video game design. The new Bachelor of Arts program, jointly certified and developed by Abu Dhabi University (ADU) and French digital arts school Rubika, will be introduced in the upcoming academic year through a partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi).

The initiative marks a significant step in the emirate’s efforts to expand its creative industries and develop a skilled talent pool for the growing gaming and interactive media sector. Saeed Ali Al Fazari, Director of Strategic Affairs at DCT Abu Dhabi; Prof. Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of ADU; and Dr. Stephane Andre, CEO of Rubika, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The program will combine international academic standards with hands-on industry experience. Through the Abu Dhabi Gaming initiative, students will have access to internships, mentorships, and opportunities with local game studios. DCT Abu Dhabi will also offer up to 140 scholarships over six years to encourage wider participation.

“By ensuring that aspiring game designers have access to world-class education and practical experience, we are enabling the growth of the gaming sector, regionally and globally,” said Al Fazari.

Rubika, a globally recognized institution in game design and digital arts, will lead curriculum development, faculty training, and facilitate international exchange programs, ensuring global best practices are embedded in the new degree.

“Establishing a partnership with ADU and DCT Abu Dhabi is a tremendous opportunity for Rubika,” said Andre. “By leveraging their creativity, the students in our programs are encouraged to draw from their own cultural roots to contribute to the enrichment of global culture through video games and animated films.”

Abu Dhabi University will host the program and ensure it meets national academic standards. Chancellor Aouad emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to aligning education with emerging industry needs. By launching the region’s first dual-certified game design degree, we’re giving students access to specialised training that opens up career opportunities, both in the UAE and internationally,” he said.
