Dubai named one of the world’s top five shipping hubs
Jebel Ali Port played a strategic role, handling 15.5 million TEUs in 2024 and accounting for 18% of DP World’s global volume.

Dubai has been ranked among the world’s top five shipping centers and recognized as the leading hub in the Arab world, according to the 2025 International Shipping Centre Development Index, released by China’s Xinhua News Agency in collaboration with the Baltic Exchange.
The report highlighted Dubai’s comprehensive maritime ecosystem, including navigation services, shipbuilding and repair, and its capacity to handle growing vessel traffic, describing the emirate as “the crown jewel of the Middle East’s maritime sector.”
Sheikh Dr. Saeed bin Ahmed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, CEO of the Dubai Maritime Authority, said the ranking reflects both the emirate’s strategic vision and the collaboration between government entities and private sector partners. He added that Dubai remains committed to adopting global best practices, updating regulations, and promoting sustainability.
The study also highlighted Dubai’s Maritime Transport Plan 2030, part of the Economic Agenda D33, which aims to expand maritime transport, enhance networks, and further develop Maritime City.
Jebel Ali Port was singled out for its strategic role. In 2024, it handled 15.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) — its highest level since 2015 — representing 18% of the 88.3 million TEUs managed globally by DP World.
Sustainability initiatives at Jebel Ali were also noted, including using biofuels, installing 50,000 square meters of solar panels, and introducing electric vehicles for container handling, collectively reducing annual CO2 emissions by approximately 2,000 tons.
Captain Ibrahim Al Blooshi, Executive Director of the Dubai Ports Authority, said the recognition reinforces Dubai’s status as a global maritime hub. He added that the authority remains committed to strengthening the sector’s contribution to the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and protecting the emirate’s marine environment.
