Swiss independent watchmakers Ulysse Nardin and URWERK have announced their first collaboration, unveiling a limited-edition model called the UR-FREAK. The release unites two of contemporary horology’s most iconic concepts: Ulysse Nardin’s Freak, introduced in 2001, and URWERK’s satellite hour display.

Limited to 100 pieces, the UR-FREAK blends the signature elements of both watchmakers and is built around a newly developed, fully integrated movement. The model combines the Freak’s rotating movement architecture with URWERK’s wandering hour satellite system in a single in-house caliber, the UN-241.

More than 150 new components were created for the watch, which also incorporates Ulysse Nardin technologies such as its Grinder automatic winding system, DIAMonSil-coated escapement components, and silicon-based oscillator.

Set for release in 2025, the timepiece builds on innovations that emerged during the revival of mechanical watchmaking in the late 1990s and early 2000s. While both companies have collaborated widely within the industry, this marks their first direct partnership.

Ulysse Nardin and URWERK remain independently operated Swiss brands, sharing a focus on advanced mechanical engineering. Founded in 1846, Ulysse Nardin is celebrated for its marine chronometer heritage and early adoption of silicon components. URWERK, which produces around 150 pieces annually, has earned a reputation for unconventional displays and contemporary designs.

The UR-FREAK features a 44mm sandblasted titanium case based on the Ulysse Nardin Freak [ONE], incorporating URWERK’s fluted bezel details and yellow accents. It retains the Freak’s crownless design, with time set via the rotating bezel. Its satellite display uses three hands with domed jumping-hour discs that track the minute scale as the movement completes a full rotation every three hours.

A silicon balance wheel sits at the center of the dial, running at 3 Hz with a 90-hour power reserve. The watch is offered with a yellow or black rubber strap and is water-resistant to 30 metres.

The movement comprises 263 components and 25 jewels. The UR-FREAK is priced at $134,057 (CHF 108,100), with equivalent pricing available in the European and UK markets.

Both companies describe the collaboration as a technical rather than cosmetic partnership, resulting in a new mechanical system rather than a reinterpretation of an existing model. The watch demonstrates how independent manufacturers can combine expertise in movement development, materials research, and design to create entirely new horological concepts.
