Abu Dhabi launches Barq to build ultra-fast EV charging network
The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and TAQA Distribution are rolling out Barq, an advanced EV charging network to redefine smart energy use and support the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goals.
Abu Dhabi is accelerating its clean mobility ambitions with the launch of “Barq”, a new initiative by the Department of Energy (DoE) in collaboration with TAQA Distribution, designed to roll out an ultra-fast and reliable electric vehicle (EV) charging network across the emirate.
The project marks a key step in Abu Dhabi’s journey toward a sustainable mobility ecosystem, underpinned by advanced infrastructure that supports environmental goals and enhances quality of life.
As part of the initiative, more than 50 charging units, each with a 360 kW capacity, will be installed at strategic locations, including Manarat Al Saadiyat, Mina Market, Burjeel Hospital in Mohammed Bin Zayed City, and several sites across Al Ain, such as UAE University, Tawam Hospital, and Al Jimi Mall, as well as City Mall in Madinat Zayed (Al Dhafra).
Each station will deliver up to 100 kilometers of range in approximately three minutes, providing drivers with one of the region’s fastest and most reliable charging experiences. To further encourage adoption, users will receive a free charge after every three sessions.
The first phase of Barq charging points will go live on January 13, 2026, aligning with Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, during which visitors will benefit from free charging throughout the event.
“Barq represents a strategic step in Abu Dhabi’s sustainable mobility journey, providing an advanced charging network that combines speed and reliability to meet the needs of individuals and institutions,” said Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, Chairman of the DoE. He added: “It reflects our commitment to advancing environmental sustainability, achieving Net Zero by 2050, and delivering real value through partnerships such as TAQA Distribution.”
According to Ahmed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the DoE, the project leverages the latest in smart energy infrastructure to ensure high operational efficiency and continuity.
“The Barq project represents a strategic step within the Abu Dhabi Government’s efforts to reinforce its leadership in sustainable mobility and smart energy, through an advanced charging network that combines technological innovation with high operational efficiency, supporting the emirate’s sustainable development and strengthening its global standing as a hub for innovation and clean energy,” Omar Al Hashmi, CEO of TAQA Distribution said.
Aligned with the National Air Quality Agenda 2031 and the UAE National Electric Vehicles Policy, the initiative supports the country’s goal to make 50% of all vehicles electric or hybrid by 2050.
Developed in collaboration with the Department of Municipalities and Transport, Barq is part of a broader effort to expand EV infrastructure, reduce emissions, and support the UAE’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
