The UAE aims for 10% of cars to be hybrid or electric by 2030. The number of electric cars doubled between 2020 and 2021, and amidst a fuel price hike in the region, a YouGov survey found that more than half of all motorists in the UAE want to switch to hybrid or electric vehicles.

Now Dubai’s Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and sustainable vehicle firm One Moto are coming together to develop three electric bike models for accelerating last-mile deliveries. For this, they will establish a smart mobility and innovation center, supporting regional sustainability. The facility aims to help the UAE achieve its net zero emission targets for 2050 by integrating electric vehicles into the delivery and logistics sector.

As part of the collaboration, engineering faculty and students will work together on the research, design, fabrication, and testing of new electric motorcycles. RIT already has a sustainability and energy efficiency center, which works on research projects with top firms to explore geothermal coupling in refrigeration and recycling palm waste to generate biofuel, among other initiatives. The RIT in Dubai is also known for working on harvesting water from the air.

The latest agreement with One Moto will help electrification of the delivery and logistics fleet.
