In the face of a worsening energy crisis, record greenhouse gas concentrations, and increased extreme weather occurrences, the COP27, to be held in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh, is looking for renewed international cooperation. 

As technology plays a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building resilience to the impacts of climate change, IBM has been appointed COP27’s technology partner. IBM will demonstrate at the conference how technology and consultancy can assist company and government leaders in coordinating sustainability goals with organizational goals while also meeting regulatory requirements and maintaining profitability. 

“IBM is honored to be a technology partner in this year’s historic COP conference and to help address the existential challenge of climate change. I believe technology can turn sustainability ambition into action,” said IBM’s Chairman and CEO, Arvind Krishna.

This partnership with the Egyptian Presidency builds on IBM’s previous environmental commitments and partnerships, such as its goal to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 or its status as a founding member of the Science-Policy-Business Forum of the United Nations Environment Programme.

IBM was welcomed as a technology partner of COP27 by COP27 President-Designate Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt who emphasized the crucial part technology plays in assisting businesses, organizations, and governments in achieving their climate goals.

Attendees at the largest annual climate action event will include heads of state, ministers, negotiators, climate activists, mayors, civil society representatives, and CEOs.
