Egypt deepens World Bank partnership to strengthen healthcare system and pharma localisation
The discussions covered infrastructure readiness, coordination, and the role of logistics and centralized storage in improving efficiency.
Egypt is stepping up efforts to strengthen its healthcare system through deeper collaboration with international financial institutions, with a renewed focus on pharmaceutical localization and service quality.
The Ministry of Health held discussions with the World Bank Group, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), to explore ways to expand cooperation across the sector.
Talks centered on strengthening pharmaceutical supply chains, increasing local production of medicines, vaccines, and biologics, and enhancing the overall quality of healthcare delivery.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar reviewed ongoing initiatives to boost domestic manufacturing capacity, while also highlighting the need to modernize regulatory frameworks and encourage greater private-sector participation.
The discussions also addressed infrastructure readiness, coordination between relevant entities, and the role of logistics and centralized storage systems in improving efficiency.
Officials pointed to the capabilities of state-owned vaccine producer VACSERA, along with ongoing technology-transfer partnerships with international players, as key building blocks for scaling local production.
Abdel Ghaffar noted that Egypt’s scientific expertise, research capabilities, and strategic geographic location position it as a potential regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and exports.
Beyond manufacturing, the talks also covered broader healthcare priorities, including strengthening primary care services and improving maternal and child health outcomes. Progress on Egypt’s universal health insurance program was also discussed as a central pillar of ongoing healthcare reform.
Both sides said the partnership could play a key role in advancing healthcare quality while supporting sustainable development across Egypt and the wider region.
