As the world marks World Environment Day on June 5, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainability and supporting the UAE’s climate goals, highlighting the growing role of clean energy in Dubai’s transition to a low-carbon future.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, said the UAE’s approach to environmental sustainability is rooted in the vision of the country’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who placed environmental protection and the responsible use of natural resources at the heart of national development.

According to Al Tayer, the UAE has built on this legacy through policies and initiatives designed to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship, helping position the country as a global leader in climate action and sustainable development.

He noted that DEWA continues to align its projects and strategies with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, by embedding sustainability across its operations and supporting the emirate’s ambitions to accelerate the shift toward a green economy and achieve net-zero emissions.

A key part of that effort is the implementation of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, both of which aim to ensure that 100% of Dubai’s energy production capacity comes from clean sources by mid-century.

Al Tayer revealed that clean energy now accounts for more than 21.5% of DEWA’s total energy production capacity, reflecting continued investment in renewable and clean energy projects across the emirate.

He described World Environment Day as an opportunity to reinforce commitments to environmental protection, encourage the responsible use of resources, and spotlight initiatives that support sustainable economic growth.

“World Environment Day is an important occasion to renew commitment to environmental protection, raise awareness about the responsible use of natural resources and highlight efforts and initiatives that support the transition towards a green economy and low-carbon development,” Al Tayer said.

He added that such efforts are essential to improving quality of life while helping secure a more sustainable future for generations to come.
