Etihad Rail to launch Abu Dhabi–Fujairah passenger service on June 30
The UAE’s first passenger rail route will cut travel time to 1 hour and 45 minutes, ahead of the wider network launch in September.
The UAE will begin passenger rail operations on June 30 with the launch of Etihad Rail’s first route between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to build an integrated national transport network.
The announcement came as H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, inaugurated the Mohamed bin Zayed City Passenger Train Station in Abu Dhabi and unveiled the UAE’s passenger rail network.
The wider network will officially launch on September 30, 2026, with additional stations opening in phases through March 2027.
During his visit, Sheikh Khaled reviewed the station’s operational readiness, smart technologies, customer services, and future expansion plans. He said the passenger rail project reflects the UAE’s vision of a fully integrated transport network that strengthens connectivity between emirates, supports economic growth, and creates opportunities across investment, tourism, and urban development.
He described the railway as a strategic investment that advances the UAE’s Projects of the 50 initiative through world-class infrastructure that enhances the country’s long-term competitiveness.
The inaugural route will connect Abu Dhabi and Fujairah in just one hour and 45 minutes, providing a faster and more sustainable travel option between the two emirates.
Ticket prices start at AED55 for Comfort Class and AED120 for Premium Class. Tickets have been available through the Etihad Rail mobile app and website since June 23.
The passenger fleet comprises 13 trains, each capable of carrying up to 400 passengers.
The network’s rollout will continue later this year. Dubai Train Station and Al Dhaid Train Station are scheduled to open on September 30, followed by Al Dhafra Train Station on December 30, 2026. The first phase will conclude with the opening of Sharjah Train Station on March 30, 2027.
Future expansion plans are also being assessed, with feasibility studies examining extending passenger rail services to additional emirates.
H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Rail, said the network represents a transformative step for the UAE’s transport ecosystem, improving connectivity and offering more flexible mobility options for residents, visitors, and businesses.
Passenger services will be operated by Etihad Rail Passenger Services, a joint venture between Etihad Rail and global transport operator Keolis.
Beyond transportation, the stations are designed as mobility hubs, featuring cafés, restaurants, retail outlets, and hospitality services, as well as onboard dining options.
The passenger network forms part of the UAE Railway Programme, launched in 2021 under the Projects of the 50 initiative. The programme is built around freight services, passenger rail services, and integrated transport solutions.
The launch comes less than five years after the programme was announced, highlighting the UAE’s push to advance sustainable mobility, economic diversification, and national development while strengthening its position as a regional logistics hub.
