The Middle East’s travel sector is experiencing record growth, with total gross bookings surpassing $101 billion. Driven by large-scale government investment, digital transformation, and major international events, the region continues to outpace global tourism growth despite recent geopolitical challenges.

This year’s Arabian Travel Market (ATM) takes place under the theme “Travel 2040: Driving New Frontiers Through Innovation and Technology,” examining how emerging technologies, hyper-personalization, and regenerative tourism will shape the future of global travel.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME at Arabian Travel Market, RX Global, says technology is becoming embedded across every stage of the travel journey, delivering experiences that are increasingly personalized, predictive, and data-driven.

“Our theme this year highlights how innovation now actively reshapes the travel ecosystem. Physical and digital touchpoints will converge, enhancing human interaction for more intuitive journeys.”

Sustainability, Curtis adds, will play an increasingly influential role in destination development, infrastructure investment, and traveler preferences, shaping a travel ecosystem that is more connected, integrated, and intelligent.

AI AND NEW TECHNOLOGY

She identifies artificial intelligence as one of the industry’s most transformative technologies, helping solve practical challenges across the traveler journey by improving personalization, customer service, demand forecasting, and operational planning.

“Automation will boost efficiency in bookings and operations, freeing teams to focus on travelers. Progress in data integration and digital identity will reduce journey friction.”

Beyond enhancing personalized experiences, Curtis believes AI’s greatest value lies in strengthening the efficiency and resilience of the wider travel ecosystem.

“For travelers, this means smoother journeys through smarter disruption management, faster rebooking during delays, and better coordination among airlines, hotels, and transport when plans change.”

She says AI will also help travel businesses improve forecasting, streamline day-to-day operations and reduce bottlenecks, making the industry more efficient and responsive as demand continues to grow.

This year’s ATM Travel Tech will spotlight innovations spanning artificial intelligence, immersive experiences, robotics, fintech and smart mobility.

Curtis says the travel technology segment is the aspect of the industry that excites her most, prompting the launch of ATM Travel Tech, a dedicated co-located event to reflect growing demand and the increasing role of technology in shaping the sector’s future.

RESILIENCE IN AN UNCERTAIN MARKET

Despite ongoing economic uncertainty, Curtis believes global demand for travel remains resilient, reflecting consumers’ continued willingness to invest in experiences, wellbeing and meaningful connections.

She says travelers are becoming increasingly value-conscious and digitally savvy, with rising expectations for seamless, personalized and sustainable experiences, prompting the industry to become more agile and customer-focused.

“While economic factors influence travel patterns, the desire to explore and connect remains robust. The industry’s challenge and opportunity lie in understanding these shifts and adapting.”

Curtis attributes the Middle East’s continued tourism growth to a combination of long-term government strategies, infrastructure investment and regional collaboration.

“Countries have heavily invested in airports, airlines, hospitality, and attractions, while initiatives like the UAE’s long-term tourism goals and Saudi Vision 2030 have diversified beyond oil.”

She adds that the region has expanded beyond its traditional luxury tourism offering by investing in business events, entertainment, culture and sport, strengthening its appeal to a broader range of travelers.

“By hosting international events, developing new destinations, and embracing digital innovation and sustainability, the Gulf has shown adaptability to evolving traveler expectations and global trends.”

She says the industry’s continued momentum demonstrates that, despite ongoing global uncertainty, travel remains a key driver of economic growth, cultural exchange and international collaboration.

Curtis attributes this momentum to continued investment across aviation, hospitality, tourism infrastructure and visitor experiences, while highlighting the increasing importance of industry collaboration.

“ATM’s momentum highlights the industry’s need to collaborate, share knowledge, and build partnerships. In a rapidly changing landscape, this appetite for cooperation signals a healthy, resilient, and forward-looking travel sector.”

REDEFINING TOURISM

As destinations continue to welcome record visitor numbers, Curtis argues that success should be measured not only by growth, but by the long-term value tourism creates for destinations and local communities.

“Sustainable growth should be defined by the long-term value tourism creates for destinations, communities and travelers alike.”

She says achieving that balance will require smarter planning, resilient infrastructure and greater use of technology to manage visitor flows and resources, while industry collaboration will remain essential.

“Platforms like ATM are increasingly important, bringing together global stakeholders to exchange ideas, showcase best practices and help shape a more sustainable future for the industry.”

Curtis also believes younger travelers are redefining industry expectations by placing greater emphasis on authenticity, purpose and personalized experiences rather than traditional tourism products.

“Younger generations are placing far greater emphasis on experiences, authenticity and purpose.”

She says digital convenience is now viewed as a basic expectation rather than a competitive advantage, requiring businesses to deliver more flexible and meaningful travel experiences.

“Seamless technology, personalization and convenience are no longer differentiators – they’re expected.”

FUTURE OUTLOOK

Looking ahead, Curtis believes the travel industry will be shaped not only by technological innovation but also by how destinations and travel brands communicate with increasingly informed and conscious travelers.

Speaking about Journeys Unpacked, a place intelligence publication which will be showcased at ATM, she says travel media is evolving beyond destination recommendations towards helping audiences better understand the places they visit.

“Travel media is evolving from simply inspiring people to travel to helping them better understand the world around them.”

As data and technology become more integrated into the sector, she expects travel journalism to provide deeper insights into traveler behavior and destination development. “The real opportunity lies in combining inspiration with insight, bringing together compelling narratives, trusted information and meaningful insights that enable audiences to make better, more conscious travel decisions.”

Curtis believes these themes will be central to discussions at ATM 2026, where the focus will shift from exploring future possibilities to demonstrating how innovation can deliver practical value across the travel ecosystem.

“When the industry gathers at ATM from September 14–17, innovation, resilience, and long-term industry growth will be central themes.”

She adds that the event will bring together stakeholders from across the industry to exchange ideas and help shape the sector’s next phase of growth.

“Bringing together experts from technology, destination marketing, aviation, and hospitality, ATM 2026 will be a platform for sharing insights, exchanging ideas, and shaping a confident future.”
