Qatar completes first autonomous electric taxi trials under Transport Master Plan 2050

Qatar has completed the first phase of operational testing for autonomous electric taxis, marking a key milestone in its efforts to build an AI-powered transport network under the Transportation Master Plan 2050.

The Ministry of Transport said the trials assessed the operational, technical, and regulatory requirements for autonomous vehicles, as well as traffic safety, infrastructure readiness, and the integration of self-driving technology into Qatar’s existing transport system.

Conducted in collaboration with Mowasalat (Karwa), the pilot also included real-world operations of autonomous electric taxis, providing valuable insights into deploying driverless mobility services across the country.

The initiative forms part of Qatar’s Transportation Master Plan 2050, a long-term strategy designed to strengthen transport infrastructure, improve mobility, and support sustainable economic growth.

According to the ministry, Qatar’s surface transport sector has made significant progress in recent years by adopting Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and artificial intelligence to enhance transport services and infrastructure. The country has also implemented a national transport planning project that leverages traffic data to support long-term mobility planning.

As part of the strategy, the ministry is exploring the development of a Transportation Data Management System, a digital platform powered by advanced spatial and geographic databases that will enable government entities and consultants to analyze traffic flows, conduct transport studies, and support data-driven decision-making.

The Transportation Master Plan 2050 will guide future investments in land transport infrastructure, including the expansion of road and public transport networks to accommodate urban development, population growth, and rising freight demand.

Sustainability is a core pillar of the strategy, with plans to expand environmentally friendly transport options, reduce carbon emissions, lower energy and fuel consumption, strengthen the transport sector’s financial sustainability through demand-management policies, and increase private-sector participation in transport development and operations.

According to the ministry, the strategy is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including higher revenues, lower vehicle operating costs, shorter travel times, fewer traffic accidents, and reduced emissions, while supporting Qatar’s broader ambition to build a resilient, secure, and sustainable transport system.
