As Gulf aviation powers continue to expand after the pandemic and invest in new mobility technologies, the Dubai Airshow has emerged as one of the region’s most important venues for global aerospace announcements. This year’s edition reflects significant activity across commercial aviation, defence, and space.

The Dubai Airshow opened its largest edition at Dubai World Central on Monday, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a hub for aerospace, defence, and space developments. Held from 17 to 21 November under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the event includes expanded exhibition space to accommodate rising interest from established industry players and new entrants.

The first day saw a series of major commercial deals. Emirates placed an order worth 38 billion dollars for 65 Boeing 777-9 aircraft powered by GE9X engines, reflecting continued demand for long-haul capacity in the region. Ethiopian Airlines announced an order for 11 additional Boeing 737 MAX jets as it works to grow its regional and international network from Addis Ababa.

Boeing signed an agreement with TAAG Angola Airlines to extend pilot training programmes focused on competency-based and data-informed scenarios. Embraer advanced its Africa strategy through a support deal with Airlink for its fleet of 10 Azorra-leased E195-E2 aircraft.

Airbus Helicopters confirmed that Bristow Group will introduce up to five H160 helicopters for offshore energy operations across Africa. The UAE’s Tawazun Council announced eight defence contracts worth 1.03 billion dollars with partners including GANS, GAL, IGG, Maximus Air, and ADSA.

flydubai expanded its commercial activity with the purchase of 60 GEnx-1B engines from GE Aerospace to support its upcoming Boeing 787-9 fleet and long-haul expansion.

“Dubai Airshow 2025 opened with an electrifying start, showcasing the remarkable growth and cutting-edge innovation driving the aerospace industry forward,” said Tim Hawes, Managing Director of Informa Markets.

Advanced Air Mobility featured prominently on day one, including an eVTOL flying display by Joby Aviation. The show also introduced its largest Space Pavilion to date, developed with the UAE Space Agency, highlighting discussions on responsible space operations and future exploration missions.
