Dia al-Azzawi

Dia al-Azzawi is a multi-disciplinary artist, publisher, and designer whose work blends contemporary practice with Arab artistic and cultural heritage. His pieces engage with social, political, and historical themes, fostering dialogue between Arab culture and other global traditions. In 1968, al-Azzawi published Towards a New Vision, a manifesto that became a foundation for Arab cultural initiatives during the 1970s. After leaving Iraq, he continued to address issues such as the destruction of Iraqi civil society, Arabic literature, and the struggles faced by Palestinians through international exhibitions and projects.

Beyond his own artistic practice, al-Azzawi supports the wider arts community by publishing, collecting, commissioning, and donating works, as well as curating international projects that highlight artists from across the Global South. His efforts reflect a commitment not only to creating art but also to cultivating platforms that amplify underrepresented voices and preserve cultural memory.
