Filmmaker David Lynch premiered a new installation at the Salone de Mobile design fair in Milan this week called “Interiors by David Lynch. A Thinking Room.” And that’s everything I knew before walking in.

Full of fixtures and finishes designed in conjunction with Piccolo Teatro di Milano, it has been the most intriguing project going into this year’s fair, largely because of Lynch’s sheer unpredictability as a filmmaker. Now we know that’s a trait he carries over well into interior design.

I don’t know what I expected to see when I pulled back the velvet curtains. Certainly, not a chair that connected my brain to the cosmos and showed me a hunk of meat. Or maybe that’s exactly what I expected? In any case, I appreciated Lynch’s thoughtfully curated experience . . . even if I’d swap out some of the art.
