Design is a low-key superhero. It’s not just about aesthetics but about wielding its power for good. It’s a universal language that speaks volumes, elevating the mundane to the magical.

That’s the vision set by experts at the Innovation by Design Summit.

The inaugural Innovation by Design Summit, organized by Fast Company Middle East in partnership with Msheireb Properties and held at Qatar’s Doha Design District, was filled with ingenious minds discussing how creativity and innovation can shape the world.

In addition to several high-profile Qatari innovators as speakers at the summit, the conversations sparked meaningful dialogue on pressing issues and showcased the innovation potential, ultimately leaving attendees with an inspiring truth: creativity, in the end, always wins.

Speaking of wins, the summit concluded with the inaugural Msheireb Innovation in Design Awards, recognizing the pioneers whose creativity has shaped our society today.

It was a night to recognize the design industry, motivate and inspire everyone to push boundaries, and use design for positive change.

A special performance by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring the compositions of Qatari artist Dana Al Fardan, ushered in the celebratory evening.

Msheireb Properties’ CEO, Eng. Ali Al Kuwari presented the honors. Landor received the Human-Centered Design award, MAD Architects was lauded for Sustainable Design, Pandora was recognized for Lifestyle and Luxury Design, and Garcia Media clinched the Technology-Powered Design award. Fast Company Middle East’s editorial team selected winners based on criteria such as replicability, design thinking, and audience impact at individual, community, and global levels.

The 2025 edition will feature additional categories.

He said, “We established the Msheireb Award for Innovation in Design to celebrate innovative design thinking because we believe that smart, accessible design can change the world for the better. Tonight’s winners embody this belief.”

The thought process for designing the trophy captures elements of Qatar and signifies innovation, creativity, and sustainability.

The architect’s vision played a crucial role in incorporating these elements into the design, ensuring they resonate with the values of Msheireb Properties. Drawing inspiration from Qatar’s natural resources, traditional architecture, and commitment to sustainability, the trophy becomes more than just an award – it’s a symbol of excellence.

In terms of design, the trophy opted for a unique and modern approach. It was crafted from sustainable crystal and made by recycling soft drink cans, a novel and contemporary approach to crystal production. Each piece of the trophy is a crystal made from recycled soda cans.

The trophy’s three distinct colors are not random. The Msheireb colors – yellow, olive green, and orange – are derived from natural sources, such as the orange baskets used for holding fruits in Qatar. The overall design, with its three tilted blocks resembling books, evokes a sense of peace and knowledge.

The innovative patterns adorning the trophy are inspired by the intricate designs on Msheireb buildings, symbolizing traditional architectural design. The base of the trophy is based on their logo, which takes the shape of the Dhow, a traditional boat used in the region. The dhow represents shared resources and community, a theme echoed by Msheireb’s very name—’ a place to drink water.’

The Msheireb Innovation in Design Awards wasn’t just a night of glitz and glamour but a beautiful example of how design can be used to promote a shared vision for a better future.
