City streets and sidewalks in the UAE have been engineered for decades to keep vehicle occupants and pedestrians safe. Until recently, streets have also lacked cycle tracks–paths exclusively for bicycles.

Today, there is growing support for bicycling in Dubai for commuting and recreation.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai unveiled two fresh tracks in Khawaneej and Mushrif areas. Spanning 7 kilometers, these additions seamlessly integrate with existing paths, creating a comprehensive 39-kilometer network.

It aligns with a key component of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040.

“These cycling tracks hold strategic significance,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the RTA. “They aim to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors by encouraging sports and leisure activities while also enhancing connectivity between existing tracks and key attractions.”

The new tracks offer distinct starting points:

The first track begins at the Qur’anic Park, extending from Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street and intersecting with Al Khawaneej Street. A dedicated pedestrian and cyclist bridge ensures safe passage before connecting to the existing cycling track network.

The second track starts near Crocodile Park in Mushrif Park. It stretches to intersect with Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street before running northward and crossing Al Khawaneej Street via a designated bridge to link with the existing Al Khawaneej cycling track.

The RTA envisions a much grander network, aiming to expand the current 544 kilometers of cycling tracks to a staggering 1,000 kilometers by 2030.

This future network will connect major districts and link popular coastal areas like Jumeirah, Al Sufouh, and the Marina with external tracks in Al Qudra, Saih Al Salam, and Nad Al Sheba.

The Innovation By Design Summit is in Doha on April 24. Attendance at the summit is by invitation only. Delegates can register here to receive their exclusive invite.
