Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority launches sensory rooms to support passengers with autism
The rooms feature low-level, adjustable lighting as well as audio-visual features, including soothing music, natural imagery, and color-based visual effects.
Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced sensory rooms at Al Satwa and Oud Maitha bus stations as part of its efforts to enhance the travel experience for People of Determination, particularly children with autism.
The initiative forms part of RTA’s broader strategy to improve customer satisfaction by delivering more inclusive and specialized services across its transport network. It also reflects a focus on optimizing existing infrastructure by transforming facilities into value-added spaces that serve a wider range of community needs.
Aligned with Dubai’s vision for accessibility and inclusion, the project aims to improve comfort and well-being for People of Determination and their families. It highlights RTA’s emphasis on integrating thoughtful design into public transport to create environments that support participation with dignity and ease.
The sensory rooms are purpose-built to offer a balanced environment of relaxation and stimulation, tailored specifically for children with autism.
They feature low-level, adjustable lighting to create a calming atmosphere, along with interactive elements such as swings that support both comfort and engagement. The rooms also include audio-visual features, such as soothing music, natural imagery, and color-based visual effects, designed to reduce sensory stress and enhance overall comfort during travel.
RTA has also been awarded the Autism-Friendly Environment Certificate by the Dubai Autism Center, recognizing its adherence to the Autism-Friendly Program standards. The certification underscores the authority’s ongoing efforts to embed accessibility into its transport infrastructure.
The initiative supports Dubai’s broader ambition to develop a transport system that is inclusive, safe, and accessible to all, contributing to improved quality of life and reinforcing the city’s positioning as a destination that prioritizes the needs of People of Determination.
