Egypt has launched a unified digital environmental registry for industrial facilities as part of its efforts to support the country’s green transition and help manufacturers meet international environmental standards.

In a statement, the Ministry of Local Development and Environment said the platform will create a national environmental database for industrial facilities, covering emissions, fuel consumption, water and energy use, waste generation, and export-related data linked to the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

Minister Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, said the system is intended to simplify registration and reporting procedures for factories while connecting relevant government entities through a single digital portal. These include the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, the Ministry of Industry, the Industrial Development Authority and the Ministry of Electricity.

Awad said the registry would support the preparation of detailed reports on fuel consumption across industrial sectors, help identify non-compliant facilities, and monitor emissions reductions resulting from environmental compliance plans.

The platform will also enable authorities to calculate and track carbon emissions, including direct emissions from fuel use and industrial processes, indirect emissions from electricity consumption, and embedded emissions associated with exported products.

Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, said the initiative marks a key step in accelerating the green transformation of Egypt’s industrial sector and strengthening the competitiveness of Egyptian exports amid growing international pressure to reduce carbon emissions.

He added that the digital integration between the Industrial Development Authority and environmental regulators represents a shift in industrial and environmental data management, leveraging interactive maps and sectoral and geographic analysis to support planning and decision-making.

According to the ministry, the registry is designed to support emissions reductions across industrial facilities and production lines, improve water and energy efficiency, and monitor production inputs, including raw materials and intermediate goods.

Future phases of the project will connect the platform with inspection and violation systems, interactive mapping tools, and additional government entities, including the Waste Management Regulatory Authority, the Ministry of Investment, and the General Organization for Export and Import Control.

Officials also discussed preparing a regulatory decision requiring industrial facilities to register and regularly update their environmental data, along with potential incentives for compliant facilities.
