Egypt unveils $15 billion New Delta megaproject to expand farmland and infrastructure
The New Delta initiative aims to reclaim desert land for cultivation amid rising population pressures and limited arable land.
Egypt’s New Delta project is set to transform a vast desert area west of the Nile Delta into arable land, with infrastructure investments estimated at $15 billion, according to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
El-Sisi made the remarks during the inauguration of the 2.3 million-acre megaproject in Dabaa, Reuters reported.
The New Delta initiative, one of Egypt’s largest agricultural development projects, aims to reclaim desert land for cultivation amid growing pressure from rapid population growth and limited arable land.
The project includes advanced irrigation networks, wastewater treatment facilities, and broader infrastructure developments aligned with Egypt’s Vision 2030 strategy.
El-Sisi said the project “was achieved through the efforts of Egyptians and the coordinated work of state institutions.”
“We are talking about a huge stretch of land where water routes, electricity networks, and roads have been implemented. Egyptians can take pride in their country and in themselves,” the president added.
The report noted that authorities have already completed the cultivation of hundreds of thousands of acres, producing a range of agricultural crops.
The launch of the New Delta project forms part of Egypt’s broader push toward large-scale development initiatives, including the New Administrative Capital and projects in Sinai, as the country advances long-term plans focused on desert reclamation and economic expansion.
In April, the Egyptian government also launched “The Spine,” a mixed-use city project with investments exceeding 1.4 trillion Egyptian pounds as part of its sustainability agenda.
The development, led by Talaat Moustafa Group in partnership with the National Bank of Egypt, is located within the company’s Madinaty project east of Cairo and has been designated a Special Investment Zone.
