Egyptian banks post $7.2 billion in profits in H1 2026

The 10 largest banks accounted for 81.453% of the sector’s total profits, generating $5.86 billion

Banks operating in Egypt recorded combined net profits of $7.2 billion in the first half of 2026, according to the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE).

In a recently issued report, the CBE said banks generated $10.95 billion in net interest income, while net operating income reached $15.33 billion. Total expenses stood at $8.13 billion.

The 10 largest banks accounted for 81.453% of the sector’s total profits, generating $5.86 billion. The five largest banks accounted for 70.14% of profits, with combined profits of $5.05 billion. For the 10 largest banks, net interest income reached $8.39 billion in June 2026, while net operating income stood at $12.26 billion and total expenses reached $6.40 billion.

The five largest banks recorded net interest income of $7.03 billion, net operating income of $10.66 billion and total expenses of $5.62 billion.

The CBE reported an average return on equity (ROAE) of 33.9% across banks operating in the domestic market as of June 2026, unchanged from March. Return on average assets (ROAA) stood at 2.6%, while the net interest margin was 5.2%.

Among the 10 largest banks, ROAE stood at 35%, ROAA at 2.6%, and the net interest margin at 5.1%. The five largest banks also recorded an ROAE of 35%, ROAA of 2.5%, and a net interest margin of 4.8%.
