One of the major forces of Saudi Arabia’s economy is agriculture. As part of its Vision 2030, the government has made environmental conservation one of its key pillars.
To address environmental, water, and agricultural challenges brought on by climate change, Google Cloud is partnering with the Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA), and Climate Engine to launch the Earth observation and science program.
According to a statement, the program lays the path for SDAIA and MEWA to pioneer AI-based climate action.
The program uses artificial intelligence (AI) and earth observation technology to provide sustainable solutions that will address climate change risks and improve the protection of the environment in the kingdom and the region.
To establish a sustainable environment, the program focuses on five main areas to be addressed in stages: environmental protection, pollution monitoring, sustainable agriculture, climate and nature protection, and water and food security. Scientists from the two organizations are using Google Earth Engine’s earth observation data and climatic insights in the program’s first phase to quantify the effect of water on vegetation and agriculture at the field, national, and regional levels.
Google Cloud and Climate Engine are creating a platform for the center with user interfaces that will highlight previous environmental case studies in water and agriculture. The platform will also allow the scientists to develop more use cases using data sets and AI capabilities.
“The program will propel climate change action in KSA and beyond with insights based on the latest data and machine learning advancements. Under Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia is becoming where the best data-driven innovation and AI are made possible,” said Dr Abdullah Bin Sharaf Al Ghamdi, President of SDAIA.
