Oman launches Green AI Alliance to support sustainable digital economy

Oman is stepping up efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of artificial intelligence as it expands its digital economy, with the country formally establishing the Green Artificial Intelligence Alliance.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology held the alliance’s inaugural meeting in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Authority for Public Services Regulation. Representatives from government entities and the private sector also attended the meeting.

The initiative is designed to bring together government, businesses, academic and research institutions, and investors to build a national ecosystem around sustainable AI and high-performance computing.

During the meeting, participants approved the alliance’s founding document, formed a technical committee, and reviewed its 2026 work plan, setting out the framework for the initiative’s next phase.

A key focus will be increasing the use of renewable and low-emission energy to power AI systems and high-performance computing infrastructure, which can require significant amounts of electricity.

The alliance will also support research into net-zero and low-emission computing, develop national expertise in sustainable AI, and encourage businesses to adopt greener technologies across their operations.

The initiative builds on Oman’s wider push to position sustainability at the center of its digital transformation. The Green Artificial Intelligence Alliance was first announced at COMEX 2025 as a platform bringing together policymakers, energy and technology companies, investors, and researchers around greener computing infrastructure.

Its areas of focus include energy-efficient AI models and processors, green data centers, advanced cooling systems, heat and water reuse, and clean energy sources such as solar, wind, storage, and hydrogen.

The alliance is also expected to explore incentives for green innovation and support projects with sustainable economic returns, while attracting local and international partnerships.

Developing lower-emission computing infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as Oman seeks to expand its AI capabilities while advancing the sustainability goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040.

The initiative will also focus on international collaboration, including exchanging expertise and standards on sustainable AI and building partnerships with global organizations working in green technology and advanced computing.

Oman plans to expand the alliance’s membership locally and internationally as it seeks to strengthen its position in green AI, renewable-powered computing, and sustainable digital infrastructure.
