Saudi Arabia’s car market has become one of the foremost automotive markets globally, solidifying its position among the top 20. Within the GCC, the kingdom’s market shines, commanding over half of all car sales in the region.

The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) reported that over 160,000 cars were imported into the Gulf between 2022 and 2023. In 2023 alone, 93,199 cars were imported, substantially increasing from the 66,870 cars imported in 2022.

Hamoud Al-Harbi, spokesperson for ZATCA, highlighted that Japan, India, the Republic of Korea, the United States, and Thailand emerged as the top countries exporting cars to Saudi Arabia.

According to the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO), 60,473 vehicles underwent safety inspections in 2023, ensuring compliance with the highest technical and safety standards. Additionally, SASO issued 18,150 energy efficiency certificates for tire products.

Eng. Wael Al-Dhiyab, the official spokesperson for SASO, emphasized the rigorous measures the Vehicle Inspection Unit implemented in 2023. He highlighted the organization’s substantial contributions to maintaining energy efficiency and product safety standards.

In line with the transition to clean energy, SASO granted a significant 465% increase in certificates of conformity for electric vehicles in 2023 compared to 2022. Additionally, the organization issued 1,505 fuel efficiency labels for new light vehicles, reflecting a concerted effort to promote sustainable transportation options.
