Saudi Arabia is actively working to diversify its economy and shed its oil-centric image by positioning itself as a major tourist destination. Initiatives such as the “Saudi Seasons” festivals and the revitalization of UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Al-Ula and Diriyah are driving this ambition forward.

To distinguish itself from unique tourist destinations, the governing body of Eastern Saudi Arabia has partnered with a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) to develop “THE RIG.” This distinctive tourist destination draws inspiration from offshore oil platforms.

The project, unveiled during a ceremony attended by Governor Prince Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, involves constructing and operating a tourist complex on an offshore platform in the Arabian Gulf, near Al Juraid Island.

After a recent $4.8 billion investment package launched by Prince Saud, this project aims to revitalize and invest in marine activities, fostering unique tourism and entertainment experiences.

THE RIG will feature several key attractions, including hotels, amusement parks, water sports facilities, and adventure experiences. Additionally, it will include eleven restaurants, a marina for yachts and seaplanes, and helipads.

Officials hail THE RIG as the world’s first tourist destination inspired by offshore oil platforms, offering a unique global attraction. The project also includes supporting stations on the Dammam, Cultural Center, and Jubail Corniches, aiming to create a comprehensive tourism experience.

This initiative aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, focusing on economic diversification and improving the quality of life for citizens. The Eastern Province has recently become a prime destination for investment, leading in attracting foreign capital.

The Innovation By Design Summit is in Doha on April 24. Attendance at the summit is by invitation only. Delegates can register here to receive their exclusive invite.
