For decades, corporate planning was anchored in a world of relative predictability with stable trade rules, open capital flows, and broadly functioning multilateral institutions.

But that world has changed structurally, and businesses are now adapting to uncertainty as a “core operating condition,” especially amid the ongoing Gulf crisis.

Supply chains that were optimized for cost are being redesigned around a new set of priorities. Now, companies have included resilience and the ability to build a business that can adapt without losing focus.

When faced with uncertainty—whether it’s geopolitical, economic, or technological—many business leaders hesitate to act boldly. Some feel overwhelmed and struggle to make decisions, while others try to ride out the chaos or focus on protecting their organizations.

But great leaders will tell you they play the long game, with clarity, because the bets they are being asked to carry right now are long and genuinely uncertain. What underpins their conviction is building the structural conditions for the business to continue, especially when timelines are not quarterly, outcomes are not guaranteed, and the pressure to show results or pivot is relentless.

For some, it has meant flexibility and adaptability, often in real time. Equally important are empathy, recognition of the impact on people, active listening, and support for teams through change.

We asked some of the region’s business leaders not whether they have conviction, but what it looks like in practice during uncertain times.

Here’s what they said:

Dr Najwa Aaraj, CEO, Technology Innovation Institute

In uncertain environments, leadership requires clarity, consistency, and disciplined decision-making. It is about protecting what matters most while remaining agile as conditions evolve. Equally important is empathy, recognizing the impact on people, listening actively, and supporting teams through change. Strong systems provide structure, but trust sustains momentum, built through transparency and accountability. Effective leaders do not simply react to uncertainty; they create focus and stability, enabling their organizations to remain resilient and positioned for long-term impact.

H.E Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary, Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi

“Under Abu Dhabi’s leadership, resilience and agility are foundations of our long-term growth and success. Across the emirate, museums are welcoming visitors, attractions are open, hospitality is fully operational, and our sector continues to perform consistently and flexibly. This is not a reactive response; this is the result of decades of strategic investment, institutional discipline, and long-term planning. Abu Dhabi is executing with clarity and confidence, demonstrating the strength of a model built for continuity and sustained global relevance.”

Reda Nidhakou, CEO, VentureOne and Nabat:

“Uncertainty tests leadership, but it also clarifies priorities. For us, the priority is to keep making a positive impact, and the main ingredient for that is people. In any circumstances, when people feel supported, trusted, and empowered, they make better decisions under pressure. That is what sustains performance over time. Leadership is about creating the conditions where others can operate at their best.”

Young Hak Jeong, CEO of LG Electronics Gulf

“In times of uncertainty, the most important thing is to stay grounded in what people genuinely need. In markets like the UAE, where expectations evolve quickly, lasting success comes from listening, adapting, and delivering meaningful innovation. At LG, we focus on solutions that simplify everyday life while building resilient operations and strong partnerships. By balancing long-term vision with execution agility, we assure continuity and relevance while earning trust in the communities we serve.”

David Noël, Vice President Middle East and Africa at Dynatrace

“When things got uncertain, the first question was never about strategy. It was about people. Are our teams safe, physically and mentally? Because when that answer is yes, they show up, they adapt, and they serve customers who need us more than ever. And that is really what leading through disruption looks like: staying close, staying human, and adjusting as you go. Also, in the long term, we will see geopolitical literacy become a core leadership skill. Disruption has always driven breakthroughs, and trusted partnerships built in hard times define relationships for the long term.”

Gaurav Mohan, SVP Sales, APAC, India & Middle East, Netscout

“Lasting success during uncertain times comes from disciplined execution and resilient leadership. Perseverance helps people stay the course in the face of uncertainty. Build trust by default while maintaining accountability through consistent routine inspection. Take ownership of outcomes, good or bad, and expect the same from everyone. Finally, value speed over perfection. If organizations can act decisively, fail fast, learn quickly, and adjust in real time to new conditions, they have a better chance of ensuring continuity and sustained growth.”

George Naddaf, Managing Director MENA at eToro

Courageous leadership in uncertain times means staying adaptable and making hard decisions without having all the information. We have to balance the long-term vision and growth with the reality of short-term circumstances. Good leadership is also reflected in proper preparation, which is why eToro has robust business continuity plans in place, ready to be implemented when needed to ensure continued service to our users worldwide in any scenario. For me, the key is to stay close to our customers as well as our staff to make sure they feel supported and heard in how we are navigating uncertainty together.”

Haider Aziz, General Manager – Middle East, Turkey, and Africa at VAST Data

“In uncertain times, the priority is consistency. Customers don’t need bold promises; they need partners who show up, execute, and deliver outcomes they can rely on. From a business perspective, that means staying close to the customer, understanding what actually matters to them in the moment, and aligning your investments accordingly. You have to be disciplined and focus on what drives real value and avoid spreading yourself too thin. As a leader, it’s about clarity and accountability. Set a direction people understand, empower your teams to execute, and make sure you’re building a business that can adapt without losing focus.”

Karl Crowther, Vice President, Middle East and Africa, UiPath

“In periods of uncertainty, success becomes the optimal mix of speed and resilience, built on operational flexibility and a solid AI strategy. During the pandemic, businesses had to pivot quickly and adopt automation and AI to ensure continuity. Yesterday’s fast adopters now hold an advantage – they’re leveraging agentic business orchestration and automation to navigate volatility. Effective leadership means designing systems and cultures that can absorb disruption – and with AI at their core, organizations maintain trust and emerge stronger.”

 Mark Mortimer-Davies, CEO at Choithrams

“Leadership in uncertain times comes down to staying close to your customers and being willing to adapt quickly. In retail, we see how small friction points can shape the overall experience, so our focus is on continuously improving every touchpoint. It’s about making practical, customer-first decisions that build trust over time. When you combine that with a clear direction and empowered teams, you create a business that is resilient, relevant, and able to grow sustainably despite changing market conditions.”

Peter Mrkic, Managing Director, TOD-MENA

“I see leadership as a responsibility to people first. My focus is always on empowering our internal teams and staying relevant to our audiences. When you get that right, resilience, continuity, and business success naturally follow.”
